What Is Performance Creative?

Performance creative is advertising made to drive a measurable action, like a purchase, a sign-up or a lead, and judged on whether it does. It usually means the videos, statics and UGC that run in paid social, on Meta, TikTok and YouTube.

The difference from other advertising isn't the format. It's how the work gets made and graded:

  • It starts from a business goal. Lower cost per purchase, more first orders, cheaper leads.
  • It's built to be tested. Many different ads go live, and the results decide which ones get the budget.
  • It's judged on numbers. If an ad doesn't bring in customers at a cost the business can afford, it gets replaced, however good it looks.

A performance creative agency, or an in-house performance creative team, does this as its main job: researching what will make people buy, making ads to test it, reading the results and making the next round.

Performance Creative vs. Brand Creative

The line isn't as sharp as it used to be. Good performance creative still has to look like your brand, and plenty of brand work now runs in paid social. But the question each one answers is different. Brand creative asks, "Will people remember us?" Performance creative asks, "Did this ad make people buy, and at what cost?"

Why Performance Creative Matters More Now

On Meta, targeting used to do a lot of the work. You picked the audience, and the ad just had to be decent. Now Meta's delivery system does most of the targeting itself, using the ad to work out who should see it. See Meta Andromeda.

That puts the creative in charge of two jobs at once: getting attention, and telling Meta's system who the ad is for. A brand with one great video now reaches the people that video appeals to and stops there. A brand with many genuinely different ads reaches many kinds of buyers. See creative diversity on Meta.

It also means a lot more ads. In our data, large accounts ran about one live creative per $1,000 of weekly spend. See how many ads to run on Meta.

What Performance Creative Looks Like

Performance creative isn't one style. The accounts we see run a mix:

What these have in common is structure. A good performance ad makes it clear in the first few seconds who it's for, what problem it solves and why this product is different, then gives a reason to act now. For what's working this month, see Meta ad creative best practices.

How to Measure Creative Performance

This is where most teams go wrong. Measuring creative performance means measuring the result you're paying for, not the easiest number to raise.

The number that decides: cost per result

Judge each ad on cost per purchase, lead or install, compared with the rest of the account. That's what the business actually pays for.

The numbers that explain: CTR, hook rate and conversion rate

Cost per purchase breaks down into three parts:

Cost per purchase = (CPM ÷ 1,000) ÷ CTR ÷ conversion rate

When we looked at 765 ads across 18 brands, post-click conversion rate explained about 85% of the difference in cost per purchase between ads in the same brand. CPM explained about 20%. CTR explained close to none. See what actually predicts cost per purchase.

In practice, that means:

  • CTR doesn't pick winners. High-CTR ads often attract curious clicks that don't buy. See Facebook ads CTR benchmarks.
  • Hook rate doesn't either. It's useful for spotting a weak opening, not for deciding which ads get budget. See hook rate benchmarks.
  • Conversion rate is the one to watch. An ad that sends people who are ready to buy is doing its job, even if it gets fewer clicks.

Compare ads inside the same account

A $10 cost per purchase is great for one brand and impossible for another. Compare each ad with its own account's average, not with industry numbers. Benchmarks are useful for context, like our Meta ads benchmarks, but the account is the real baseline.

Expect winners to fade

Performance creative has a shelf life. In our data, only 34% of large accounts' top 10 ads were still in the top 10 two months later. See creative fatigue on Meta. Measuring creative performance means tracking how fast winners decline, not just which ones won.

How Performance Creative Gets Made

Most performance creative programs follow the same loop:

  1. Research. What do buyers want, what do they doubt, and what are they using now? Reviews, comments, sales calls and competitors' ads are the usual sources.
  2. Strategy. Decide the angles to test: which buyer, which problem, which reason to choose you. See how to build a creative strategy.
  3. Production. Make genuinely different ads, across formats, not ten versions of one.
  4. Testing. Launch them and let the spend and results sort them. See how to structure a Meta account for creative testing.
  5. Iteration. Make new versions of what's working, and replace what isn't, before results drop.

The full version of this process is in how to run a Meta ad creative process.

Who Does Performance Creative?

Brands usually choose between three options:

  • An in-house team. You get full control and deep brand knowledge, but it's hard to hire the range of skills needed (strategist, editor, motion designer, designer, creator management) and keep up the volume. See in-house vs. agency ad creative.
  • A performance creative agency. A specialist team brings experience across many accounts and can make UGC, motion and statics at volume. Pricing models vary, from flat fees to a percentage of ad spend. See what a creative agency for Meta ads costs.
  • Freelancers and UGC platforms. These are cheaper per asset, but strategy and quality control stay with you. See UGC agency vs. platform vs. freelancers.

The job title you'll see on all three sides is performance creative strategist: the person who decides what to test, briefs the ads and reads the results.

Common Performance Creative Mistakes

  • Chasing clicks. Optimizing for CTR or hook rate instead of cost per purchase.
  • Making variations instead of new ads. Ten versions of one video with different hooks reach the same people.
  • Waiting for winners to die. By the time an ad's cost has clearly risen, the replacement should already be live.
  • Forgetting the brand. Ads that don't look like your brand can win short term and wear down trust over time.
  • Ignoring what happens after the click. If the ad and the landing page tell different stories, conversion rate suffers.

FAQ

What is performance creative?

Performance creative is ad creative made to drive a measurable action, like a purchase or a lead, and judged on the cost of that result. It's usually the UGC, motion and static ads brands run on Meta and TikTok.

What is the difference between performance creative and brand creative?

Brand creative aims to build awareness and how people feel about a brand, and is judged on recall and reach. Performance creative aims to drive a specific action now, and is judged on cost per purchase, lead or install.

How do you measure creative performance?

Judge each ad on its cost per purchase or lead, compared with its own account's average. Use CTR, hook rate and conversion rate to explain why an ad worked or didn't. In our data, post-click conversion rate explained about 85% of the difference in cost per purchase between ads, and CTR almost none.

What does a performance creative strategist do?

A performance creative strategist decides which ideas to test, writes the briefs, works with editors, designers and creators to make the ads, and reads the results to plan the next round.

What is a performance creative agency?

A performance creative agency makes ads for paid social and judges them on business results like cost per purchase. Some also buy the media. Others, like Biddyco, focus on the creative and work alongside your media buyers.

How many ads do you need for performance creative?

It depends on spend. In our data, large Meta accounts ran about one live creative per $1,000 of weekly spend, with new ads replacing fading ones every few weeks.
